• SPORTS AND LEISURE
Fishing lovers will enjoy coming to Xcalak which is world renown for it’s fly fishing and sport
fishing.
Between the house’s beach and the reef exist many coral heads that can be explored by snorkelling
and kayaking. We do a lot of snorkelling and it would be a pleasure to show these to you. Great
pictures can be taken ( see our pictures in “Sea Life”).
A peaceful fishermen’s village, Xcalak has many small local restaurants to please all.
• BOAT TRIP
Costa de Cocos (6.1 km from Casa Caracola) offers boat trips to Bird Island and San Pedro, Belize.
They also have fishing and fly fishing service as well as scuba diving excursions and training.
XTC Dive Center in Xcalak has exclusive access to Banco Chinchorro, the largest coral atoll on the
Great Mayan Reef, classified as a UNESCO’s World Heritage Site. This is the most extensive reef
system in Mexico and has been declared a national marine sanctuary. Their full service dive center
offers PADI, NAUI and SDI diving instructions as well as various other boat trips.
Many private trips can be organized with local fishermen.
• CAR TRIP
Our favourite : A day trip to the Mayan ruins of Kohunlich « The Temple of the Masks » and
Dzibanche where you can see wild monkeys (spider and howlers). These are near Chetumal. And
don’t miss the Mayan Ruins of Chaccoben near Limones.
Discover the remarkable Mayan Museum of Chetumal (Quintana Roo’s capital city).
Organise a day trip to Cenote Azul and Bacalar with a boat ride on the « Laguna de 7 colores ».
For shopping , try Mahahual, a seaside resort with also many restaurants and boutiques.
